Tencha Tea

Tencha tea is a unique and highly revered Japanese green tea that is primarily known for being the precursor to matcha. Unlike other green teas, Tencha leaves are cultivated under shade for three to four weeks before harvest, a process that enhances their chlorophyll content and gives the tea its vibrant green color. After being picked, the leaves are steamed to halt oxidation, then dried without rolling, a step that differentiates it from other teas. The result is a leaf that is flat and crumbles easily, ideal for grinding into the fine powder known as matcha. Tencha offers a delicate balance of sweetness and umami, with minimal bitterness, making it a cherished component in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Caffeine Content in Tencha Tea

The caffeine content in Tencha Tea is typically around 100mg per serving. This can vary based on the preparation method, including whether or not the tea was decaffinated. In the case of uncaffinated tea, Tencha Tea will contain about 2% or less than the original caffeine content, or 2mg of caffeine.
